What is a Mental Health Crisis?

According to most law enforcement policies, a mental health crisis exists when one of these situations is occurring.

  • IF YOU FEAR FOR YOUR SAFETY OR THAT OF A LOVED ONE.
  • If you or a loved one are homicidal, suicidal, having mania, or decomposition of day-to-day functions.
  • If there is elopement of a minor or elopement of an adult with a mental health diagnosis.

Helping Someone in Crisis

If you are in the situation of needing to support someone experiencing a mental health crisis, following are some tips to assist you.

  • Stay with them as long as it is safe for you to do so.  If not, find the closest place where you can guarantee your safety.
  • Listen to them without judgement.
  • Encourage them to take action to reach out to resources using the Get Support Together Mental Health Provider Directory.  If this is a mental health crisis where they are at risk of hurting themselves or others, do not hesitate and call 911, your Local Mental Health Authority, or a Crisis Resource Support Line.
